a journey to healthy balance

About Me February 8, 2011

What began as a seemingly innocent journey has completely changed my life. I remember walking back to my dorm from class my Junior year at UNC-Chapel Hill and wanting so desperately to want to go to the gym to work-out. I felt miserable about my body but had no knowledge to change my lifestyle and what I ate. After giving it all to the Lord, my life has never been the same.

My motivations began to change, and I attended group fitness classes and began to learn about how the body works and which muscles to use for desired results. My body began to change, but I plateaued with weight lifting and cardiovascular exercise. I realized that I had to incorporate nutrition and diet into the mix to get the full effect, and not the fat-free diet that the media feeds us. I took a “personal health” class and began to learn about proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. This new knowledge caused my interest in the event planning career I had intended to pursue to wane as I fell in love with the human body.

My personality lends toward educating and leading, so this knowledge was a discovery that I had to share. I was 22 years old and never really learned how to be healthy, how to eat and how to take care of myself. The more that I learned, the more fascinated I became, and with this came the life-altering decision to pursue a career in healthcare. This meant I would enroll in summer school two days after I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communication, concentrated in Public Relations, to begin my prerequisites.

No one in my family is has a “medical” job, so I was ignorant to my options. When one of the girls in my Physics class mentioned that she was pursuing Physician’s Assistant as a career, I flooded her with questions. The more I learned, the more I realized it is the perfect career for me…primary care of patients under supervision; having a salary that is more than sufficient but one that means I am not in it for the money; a well-rounded, intense education that will prepare me for what I believe to be the only career choice for me.

I am now a 23-year-old interested in faith, health, nutrition, fitness, fashion, and traveling. I am NOT a registered dietitian and anything featured here should be cleared with your physician. I am in the process of applying to physician’s assistant school and praying about what God wants me to pursue in the meantime.
